The award honors a member of Pi Beta Phi who has distinguished herself and who has achieved success and recognition within her profession. It is presented biennially at Pi Beta Phi’s convention.

Ruth’s greatest philanthropic interests include her alma mater Southern Methodist University (SMU), the Salvation Army and the United Way. Ruth has served on SMU’s Board of Trustees since 1968, and she was the first woman to ever chair that board. In other firsts, Ruth was the first woman to serve on and chair the Salvation Army Dallas Advisory Board. She was also the first woman to be elected to the board of Goodwill Industries and serve as vice president of the Goodwill Foundation. She is one of the few American recipients of the Order of Distinguished Honorary Service, presented to her by the General of The Salvation Army Board in London.

Ruth has been honored many times for her philanthropic work. Some of her most notable honors include being voted the #1 Philanthropist in the Nation by the National Society of Fundraising Executives, being selected as Outstanding Trustee in the Nation by the Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities, and she is a recipient of the Woodrow Wilson Award from the Smithsonian.
